Pro Media Tools 1.1.6 released with OS X 10.8 support

Last week we released Pro Media Tools 1.1.6, a minor update to our suite of media management workflow tools.

Mountain Lion support

We're now supporting the recently-released OS X 10.8 update.

Compressor and DVD Studio Pro-compatible chapters

In version 1.1.5, chapter markers set by QT Edit were only visible in QuickTime Player and on iOS devices. By popular demand, we've tweaked them to now show up in Compressor and DVD Studio Pro.

QT Edit can import markers from an FCPX XML file so this is a great solution for users wanting to easily get Final Cut Pro X markers into their compressed export or DVD. It can also import markers from Final Cut Pro 7 and Avid.

QT Edit frame export

QT Edit can now export the current frame of the movie as a PNG, JPG, TIFF or BMP. This is much better than the frame export in QuickTime Player 7 because it always exports as a PCT file no matter which option you select. This causes problems because PCT files aren't supported in 64-bit applications like Preview or Photoshop.

New QT Edit Quick Tasks

We've added extra Quick Tasks to QT Edit for disabling audio tracks. This is especially useful for batch disabling the audio tracks of multiple movies at once.

Introducing Film Terms for iOS and Mac

We've just launched our newest application, Film Terms, for iOS and Mac.

Film Terms is a searchable glossary of over 400 filmmaking terms (and counting) and is a great way of keeping your knowledge up to date.

We're keen to hear what people think (and please request any terms you'd like to be included), so feedback is much appreciated.

Our cross-platform future

We initially started out as a company developing solutions for Final Cut Studio users on the Mac. Final Cut Pro was a growing application that had made many inroads into professional film and TV production and was bringing lots of new users to the Mac for the first time.

Then Apple released Final Cut Pro X which threw a wrench into the engine of many post houses and developers like ourselves. The fallout of Apple's decision, one year on, is that the market has become heavily fragmented. There is no clear market leader - some have embraced FCPX, others Adobe, Avid, Autodesk or Lightworks, with many still keeping FCP 7 for now.

We were quick to add cross-NLE support to our applications but we were aware of an underlying thread within the post production industry that some were not keen to trust Apple with their livelihoods anymore.

We monitored this underlying unease for a while, unsure what was going to happen. We noticed it steadily growing until it reached fever-pitch two weeks ago when Apple released a non-update to their two-year-old Mac Pro and the web came alive with articles on switching to Windows or building a Hackintosh.

Not everyone will be switching to Windows - this is a logical continuation of the market fragmentation that already exists - but we want to support the NLEs and platforms that our customers use.

We've been dabbling with Windows development this year and already have a Windows 7 version of our popular organization app, Post Haste. We're now ready to announce that by the end of this year, most of the applications we create will have Windows equivalents.

We'll still support the Mac just as much as before, but now future products will be developed with cross-platform compatibility in mind, much as we develop for cross-NLE compatibility today.

On that note, we're going to start beta testing some of our Windows ports soon and are looking for Windows-based editors to help test them. We're looking for editors or production houses using Avid or Adobe Creative Suite on Windows 7 or 8. If you're interested in being a part of this, please contact us.

Post Haste now supports variables

Yesterday we released Post Haste 2.1.2 for Mac and Windows with a much-requested new feature: variables.

You can now enclose a parameter name in square brackets (e.g. [client]) to have that variable replaced with the parameter value when a new project is created. This allows you much greater customization of the project template to meet the naming conventions of your facility.

The variable must match the name of the parameter fully, including spaces and punctuation, but capitalization doesn't matter. For more details on the variables feature and how Post Haste behaves in certain situations, please see the Post Haste user manual.

Post Haste is an essential tool for organizing your creative projects. Download it free for Mac and Windows today.
